Nikon Monarch 3 10x42 Review

In the 10 plus years that I have been a hunter, I have been privileged to use high-end optics from some of the most trusted brands. When Nikon launched its Monarch line of binoculars, I was very much interested to see how the binoculars in this series would compare to the optics I was used to.

Fortunately, I have had an opportunity to use the Monarch 3, the Monarch 5 as well as the Monarch 7. When I compared the three binoculars, I found that while the Monarch 7 is the priciest and best, the Monarch 3 is the best for persons on a tight budget. Below is my honest Nikon Monarch 3 review 10x42.

Binoculars Guru's Honest Unbiased Nikon Monarch 3 10x42 Review

Ergonomic Design

At first sight, I was immediately delighted by the unique and ergonomic design of the Monarch 3 10X42. The two barrels have grooves that make handling easy. The rubber armor of the binocular feels comfortable and does not slip even when held with wet hands. The eye cups have a soft rubber covering them. Compared to the Monarch 5 and 7, the Monarch 3 is significantly large. However, it is lighter than its pricier counterparts. As a hunter who spends lengthy periods of time on a hunt, I found the pricier Monarch 7’s bulkiness to be a drawback. Thus, concerning portability, the Monarch 3 is the best among the three. The Monarch 7’s weight can attribute to its sophisticated and high-density lens system.

High-quality Glass/Lenses

I have written and read many Nikon binoculars review, and one thing I can say about Nikon is that they are experts at making high-quality lenses. With an objective lens made using high-density extra dispersion glass the Monarch 3’s lenses are of the same quality as those of the Monarch 5 and the Monarch 7. The silver alloy roof prisms of this binocular are phase corrected and produce high contrast and clear images. Given that the Monarch 7 costs almost double the price of the Monarch3, the latter’s extra-dispersion glass is quite a bargain. Thus, regarding value for your money, the Monarch 3 is again the undisputed winner among the three Monarch models.

Fully Multicoated Optics

Not many binoculars in the Monarch 3’s price range can boast of having fully multicoated optics. So the fact that the Monarch 3 10X42 has fully multicoated optics is quite impressive. All lenses coated with anti-reflective coatings that guarantee exceptional light transmission and image brightness. Both the Monarch 5 and 7 have fully multicoated optics but will cost you significantly more to buy compared to the entry-level Monarch 3.

Ease of Use and Construction

The Monarch 3 10X42 designed for easy handling. The focus wheel turns smoothly and is large enough for turning even when you have gloves on. Additionally, the rubber grooves on the wheel make it easier to turn. As for its construction, Nikon does not disappoint. The three Monarch binoculars made from a lightweight polycarbonate material wrapped in a rugged rubber armour. This rubber exterior protects it from knocks and bumps. This binocular can, therefore, handle itself in harsh weather conditions and feels pretty solid.
